How To Deal With Disability Discrimination In The Workplace

Dealing with disability discrimination in the workplace can be a difficult and emotional experience. However, there are steps that you can take to address and overcome this type of discrimination.

  1. Understand your rights: The Disabilities Discrimination Act 1992 prohibits discrimination against individuals with disabilities in the workplace. Familiarise yourself with the laws and regulations that protect your rights.
  2. Document the discrimination: Keep a record of any instances of discrimination, including the date, time, and details of the incident. Include any witnesses and their contact information.
  3. Address the issue with your employer: If possible, try to address the issue informally with the individual. They may not be aware that their actions or words are causing offence or creating a hostile work environment.
  4. Report it: If informal resolution is not possible or does not resolve the issue, report the incident/s to your employer via the human resources department.
  5. Seek legal assistance: If the discrimination continues, seek legal assistance from an attorney who specialises in disability discrimination.
  6. Educate your colleagues: Talk to your colleagues about your experience and educate them on the importance of treating everyone with respect and dignity.
  7. Seek support: Dealing with discrimination can be emotionally draining. Seek support from friends, family, or a therapist to help you cope with the stress.

Remember, you have the right to a safe and respectful work environment. Don’t let disability discrimination stand in the way of your success and well-being.
