How To Deal With Discrimination In The Workplace As An Employee

Discrimination in the workplace can take many forms, such as discrimination based on race, gender, sexual orientation, or disability. Dealing with discrimination can be difficult, but there are steps you can take to address it and protect yourself.

  1. Document the discrimination: Keep a record of any discriminatory incidents, including the date, time, and details of what happened. If possible, gather evidence, such as emails or witness statements.
  2. Report the discrimination to your supervisor or human resources department: It is important to report the discrimination as soon as possible to give your employer an opportunity to address the issue.
  3. Seek support from co-workers and union representatives: If you are a union member, reach out to your union representative for support and guidance. If you are not a union member, consider talking to co-workers who have experienced similar discrimination or seek support from employee resource groups.
  4. Consider filing a complaint with the EEOC or state labour board: If your employer does not take appropriate action to address the discrimination, you can file a complaint with the Fair Work Commission (FWC) or your local state or territory safe work authority.
  5. Take care of yourself: Dealing with discrimination can be emotionally taxing. It is important to take care of your mental and physical health. Seek support from friends and family and consider talking to a therapist or counsellor.

It’s important to remember that discrimination is not acceptable, and you have the right to a workplace free from discrimination. By taking the steps outlined above, you can help to address the discrimination and protect yourself.
